Sports medicine and training

An area that I am particularly excited to contribute is the application of diffuse optics to sports medicine and training.

Validation of the Humon.io wearable NIRS device

I am collaborating with a startup company to develop a wearable gadget,  to assess lactate and oxygen consumption in muscle to optimize training. While the approach of this company is quite simple, with a two wavelength CWNIRS system, I believe the addition of the DCS blood flow measure will provide a more reliable biomarker of muscle fatigue and transition from aerobic to anaerobic consumption. The interesting challenge for me will be the miniaturization of the DCS component.

Repeated concussion and brain injury

I am involved in the Harvard Football Players Health study in small animals and I am very interested in measuring the effect of concussion in the field.
